Men's Golf In Third At Cavalier Classic

CHARLOTTESVILE, Va. - Sophomore Tim Courtney is tied for eighth at 3-over-par and the Spiders are in third after two rounds Saturday of the Andrea Brotto Cavalier Classic being played at the par-72, 6,879-yard Birdwood Country Club.
Courtney shot a 2-over-par 74 in the morning round and carded a 1-over 73 in the afternoon to sit at 3-over 147 entering Sunday's third and final round.
The Spiders shot a 296 in the first round, which had them just four shots off the lead. Richmond shot a 303 in the afternoon for a 599, which is four shots behind second place UNC Greensboro (595). Maryland is in fourth (603) and VCU is in fifth (606) in the 10-team tournament. The hosts from Virginia have the lead at 577 after a 285 in the second round.
Richmond junior Jordan Utley is tied for 13th at 149. Utley shot a 1-under-par 71 in the opening round, but followed that up with a 78 in the second round. Junior Billy Hanes is tied for 21st at 152. Hanes carded a 3-over 75 in the morning round and a 77 in the second round.
Sophomore Grant Rafield is one stroke behind Hanes at 153 (76-77) and senior John Pelet is tied for 31st at 155 (79-76).
The third and final round of the Cavalier Classic will be played Sunday. This is the Spiders' final tune-up before the 2007 Atlantic 10 Championship being held May 4-6 at Orange County National Golf Club in Winter Garden, Fla.
