ATLANTA, Ga. - Freshman Andrew Benford won the 5,000-meter run and sophomore Jessica Young finished third in the 400-meter dash Sunday at the Georgia Tech Invitational, the last meet for the Richmond track & field team before the NCAA East Regionals.
Benford ran the 5,000 in 14:50.68 to win the event, while junior Hunter Willis finished third in 14:59.00.
"Andrew and Willis ran fantastic races," Richmond men's coach Steve Taylor said. "They ran very competitive races against a strong group of athletes. They reeled in a couple of guys from Florida State. Andrew just kept pulling away over last two laps. Hunter passed the two guys, but one came back over the last 200 yards. It was still a great race for him."
Young ran the 400 in 53.14 seconds to place third overall and second among collegiate competitors, finishing behind Georgia Tech's Ashlee Kidd. Young took sixth in the 200, and fourth among collegiate runners, with a time of 23.65.
"Jessica ran very well in the 200, 23.65 is an excellent run for her, her fastest this season," Richmond women's coach Lori Taylor said.
Freshman Heather Roush won the first flight in the discus and took ninth overall with a throw of 140-feet-0.
Junior Neil Slotterback placed sixth in the javelin with a toss of 171-4, which was just shy of his personal best. Junior Jonathan Molz finished 12th in the 1,500 run in 4:02.16.
This was the Spiders last meet before the NCAA East Regional, to be held May 25-26 in Gainesville, Fla. Young will compete in the 100 and 400 dashes by meeting the qualifying times. Senior Beth Crocus will compete in the hammer based on her performance and the javelin by way of winning the Atlantic 10 title. Freshman Kristen Crawford will take part in the shot put for winning the A-10 title.
