GAINESVILLE, Fla. - Sophomore Jessica Young qualified for the NCAA National Championships in the 400-meter dash, breaking her own school record for the second-straight day at the NCAA East Regional Championships.
Young finished fourth in the 400 dash finals in a time of 52.49 seconds, which outdid her previous school-record time of 52.68 that she ran on Friday in the preliminaries. The top five runners in the finals automatically qualified for the NCAA National Championships.
"She ran a fantastic race," Richmond women's coach Lori Taylor said. "This was the deepest 400 field of any of the Regionals with three of the top-4 ranked collegians in the country."
Georgia Tech's Ashlee Kidd finished third in 51.46 seconds, Penn State's Shana Cox was second in 51.38 and South Carolina's Natasha Hastings won the race in 50.23.
Young, who was named an Indoor All-American this past winter, will compete in the NCAA National Championships to be held June 6-9 in Sacramento, Calif.
"She's going on to NCAA Championships and will be looking to lock down her second All-American honor of the year," Taylor said.
Senior Beth Crocus finished her collegiate career with an 11th place finish in the hammer with a toss of 173-feet-8. Crocus had finished 24th in the javelin (134-2) on Friday.
Freshman Kristen Crawford took 28th in the shot put on Friday with a throw of 42-8 3/4.
