WINTER GARDEN, Fla. - The Richmond men's golf team struggled with the greens at Orange County National Golf Club in Friday's first round of the Atlantic 10 Tournament on the way to shooting a 307 that has the Spiders in ninth place out of 12 teams.
"Obviously we're disappointed with slow start, we're going to practice this afternoon and see if we can fine a key for success in the next two rounds," Richmond head coach Adam Decker said.
The Spiders are three strokes behind eighth-place Temple and 10 strokes behind sixth-place George Washington. Charlotte has the lead after the first round, followed by Xavier, St. Bonaventure, Rhode Island and Dayton.
Richmond senior John Pelet is tied for 15th after shooting a 1-over-par 73 on the par-72, 6,849-yard Panther Lake Course at Orange County National. Pelet shot a 2-over 38 on the front nine and a 1-under 35 on the back.
Sophomore Tim Courtney is tied for 23rd at 2-over-par 74 after going 1-over on each side. Junior Jordan Utley hit the ball well according to Decker, but struggled on the greens.
"The greens were giving us fits," Decker said.
Utley is tied for 46th at 7-over 79 (39-40), while junior Billy Hanes is in 54th with an 81 (41-40) and sophomore Grant Rafield shot an 82 (42-40) to sit in a tie for 58th.
The second round of the 54-hole Atlantic 10 Championship will be played Saturday with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. Sunday's final round will be tee times beginning at 8 a.m.
