Richmond sophomore Jessica Young came just .04 of a second from qualifying for the finals of the 400-meter dash at the NCAA National Championships, running a 52.82 Friday in the semifinals.Young was in the second of two semifinal heats and finished fourth in her heat. The top three runners in each heat advanced to Saturday's final, along with the next two fastest times.
Young finished just .04 of a second behind Alabama's Trish Bartholomew (52.78) for third place in her heat. That slim margin was enough to send Bartholomew into Saturday's final. Young had run a school record 52.49 at the NCAA East Regional Championships.
"She's disappointed, she wanted to make the finals and she felt good," Richmond coach Lori Taylor said. "Her sock started falling down into her shoe and the heal of her shoe started coming off, which made it tough for her to push off the way she wanted to. Even so, she was close."
The indoor All-American in the 60 dash ran a 53.05 in the first round of the 400 dash on Wednesday to advance to Friday's semifinals. Young had the third fastest seeded time in her heat and needed to finish third to earn the automatic bid, or have one of the two fastest remaining semifinal times.
Young is the Richmond outdoor school record holder in the 100, 200, 300 and 400 dashes, along with as a member of the 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams.
She will compete in the USA Outdoor Championships in Indianapolis, Ind., June 21-24.
