UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Sue Murphy and the 2008 Richmond lacrosse team have voted seniors, Samantha Tract and Jenna Hubbard to help lead the way to a fourth straight Atlantic 10 title. Both the defender Tract and attacker Hubbard have been starters since their freshman season in 2005. This year's senior class, were freshman when Richmond won their first A-10 title at UR Stadium in Richmond, Va. They have gone on to win the championship two more times, putting Richmond at the top of the conference for three-straight years.
"I am thrilled to have Samantha Tract as captains for the 2008 season. They understand the building process of our program but more importantly, they have shared in three A-10 championships," Murphy said. "Leading both on and off the field, they are very engaged in the development of the younger players and their sole mission is to win another A-10 championship while moving Richmond lacrosse further in the NCAA tournament."
Lacrosse Magazine ranked the Spiders no. 20 in their preseason poll. Richmond lacrosse is excited to start off their challenging 2008 schedule, facing three top-ten teams in their first month of play. Following winter break, the Spiders will get right into pre-season workouts and practices to prepare for their February start date. First up, the Spiders will host the England National Team for an exhibition game February 11. Three days later, Richmond hosts Longwood for their official season opener as they host Longwood February 14 at First Market Stadium.
This year's team welcomes 11 freshmen and returns 14 players from last year's A-10 Championship team. A strong senior class will of five, Hubbard and Tract along with three other experienced players, Erin Kennedy, Claire Cunniff and Zara Nematollahi will lead Richmond in their upcoming 2008 season.
"Jenna having been a four year starter for us on attack has been steady in her performances throughout her career," said Murphy. "She is prepared to step into a huge role both on and off the field with her upbeat leadership and passion to succeed. With that much game experience, she brings composure to a young attack."
"Sam has been a mark down defender for four years for our defense," Murphy said. "After the graduation of 5th year goalkeeper, Jackie Swansburg, Sam has been very focused on her own play by leading by example as she looks to work with newcomers in the cage and on the defensive unit. Sam is a fierce competitor and is completely capable of taking over when needed."
