UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Richmond freshman Brad Miller was named the Atlantic 10 Player of the Week and Rookie of the Week after winning the Frank Landry Invitational in his collegiate debut on Oct. 13-14 at Spring Creek Golf Club.
Miller carded a 3-under 69 in the final round to finish the 54-hole tournament at 6-under-par 210 and win by three shots.
"It was really exciting," said Miller. "The first day we played 36 holes and I was worried a little about my stamina, but I stayed as focused as I could and made a couple putts."
Miller opened the tournament with a 2-under 70, and then finished the second round with a 1-under 71 on the par-72, 7,186-yard course. The Timonium, Md. native was tied for the lead entering the final round of his first collegiate tournament and with a chance at medalist honors within his grasp, Miller carded a 3-under 69 to win by three strokes.
Miller's 6-under-par 210 ties the school record for lowest three-round total to par. "I've never been in that position," said Miller. "But I knew I was playing well. I've always liked being under pressure, so to have the chance to have pressure on me was a great experience. Hopefully, I can do it more because it was a lot of fun."
The Spiders finished fifth in the 14-team field at 888 after rounds of 290, 303 and 295.
Miller's victory was the fourth time a Spider has earned medalist honors during Decker's four years at Richmond. Decker has also led the Spiders to a pair of team titles and a spot in the 2005 NCAA Regional Championships.
The Spiders have now won the Atlantic 10 Player of the Week award after all three tournaments this fall. Senior Lawrence Lessing won the award after Penn State's Rutherford Intercollegiate and sophomore Sam Beach received the honor after the VCU Shootout.
