KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. - The Richmond men's golf team opened up the 2008 spring season with a 4-over-par 292 and the Spiders are tied for first after the first round of the 54-hole Cuthbert Cup.
The second round is Monday and the third round will be played on Tuesday.
"This was a good start to the spring season," Richmond head coach Adam Decker said. "We got off to a great start and now we have to keep it going on Tuesday."
Sophomore Robert Lindstrom and junior Grant Rafield are tied for eighth after shooting even-par 72s on the 6,834 Kiawah Island Resort's Osprey course. Senior Jordan Utley shot a 1-over 73 and is tied for 12th. Junior Tim Courtney shot a 3-over-par 75 and is tied for 26th. Sophomore is in 65th after shooting an 86.
"There were really windy conditions on the island as we expected and the guys handled it really well," Decker said. "It's good to be at the front and we hope to back it up tomorrow."
The Cuthbert Cup is a men's and women's tournament taking place at the same time. On Sunday the men will play the Cougar course and on Tuesday the men and women will be paired together on the Osprey course.
