KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. - The Richmond men's golf team entered the second round of the Cuthbert Cup tied for first, shot two strokes better than the first round, but dropped to fifth in the tightly packed field.
The Spiders are just three strokes off the lead entering Tuesday's third and final round. Richmond shot a 290 on Monday and sits at 582 through two rounds. UNC-Wilmington and Washington State are tied for the lead at 579, while the College of Charleston is in third at 580 and Maryland is in fourth at 581.
"We played well as a team today, nobody shot more than 75, but there were a lot of low scores out there," Richmond head coach Adam Decker said. "We're still in good position to make a run at winning the tournament."
Richmond senior Jordan Utley shot a 1-under-par 71 Monday on the Cougar and is tied for 10th at even-par 144. Junior Grant Rafield is tied for 14th at 145 after following his first-round 72 with a 1-over 73.
Sophomore Robert Lindstrom is tied for 16th at 2-over 146 after a 2-over 74 Monday. Junior Tim Courtney shot an even-par 72 Monday and is tied for 22nd at 3-over 147. Sophomore Hunter Townsend regrouped from an opening round 86 to shoot a 3-over 75 and move into a tie for 59th at 161.
The Cuthbert Cup is a men's and women's tournament taking place at the same time. The men and women will be paired together on the Osprey course in Tuesday's final round.
