Traynor Clinches NCAA Spot, Howard Wins Gold At A-10 Championship

AMHERST, Mass. - Freshman Monica Howard captured the gold medal in the javelin and classmate Nicol Traynor posted an NCAA Regional qualifying mark in the 5,000m as action concluded Sunday at the 2008 Atlantic 10 Outdoor Track & Field Championship in Amherst, Mass. The Spiders captured five medals on the final day, as the women's team finished fifth and the men's team took ninth.

Howard, a freshman from Wilmington, Ohio captured the Spiders' lone gold medal for the Championship with her mark of 38.41m in the javelin. Her toss just edged the 38.35m by Rhode Island's Jessica Pagano, who finished second.
The stellar performances by Spider freshmen continued with Traynor's NCAA Regional qualifying mark in the 5,000. She raced to the finish in 16:42.96, which was good for the bronze medal and just six seconds shy of the Richmond school record. The time stands as the fastest in the event by a Spider freshman in school history.
Two more Spiders donned the silver medal on Sunday with freshman X'auntasia Johnson's performance in the triple jump and sophomore Amy Van Alstine's showing in the 1,500m. Johnson leaped to a distance of 11.75m in event, while Van Alstine was clocked in 4:38.25.
After a strong Saturday for the men, Jonathan Molz kept the momentum going by placing third in the 1,500. He raced to the line in 3:54.40, which was good for the Spiders' ninth medal in the Championship.
Also for the women, Jasmine Cottle led a trio of Spiders in the 200m with an 11th-place finish (25.84), followed by JoAnna Ubiwa in 17th (26.46) and Marissa White in 19th (27.26). Cottle took home 13th in the 400m (58.26). White was eighth in the finals of the 100m hurdles (15.93),
Tara Markey had an impressive fourth-place showing in the 800m with a time of 2:14.15, followed in 14th by Paloma Krakower (2:18.66) and by Diana Filtz in 27th (2:23.80). Van Alstine, who was ninth in the 5,000m (17:40.15), was followed in the 1,500 by Diana Filtz 12th-place finish (4:48.50) and Jenn Ennis in 13th (4:48.70). Julie Rechel was sixth in the 5,00 with a time of 17:12.57.
Richmond 4x100 relay was sixth (48.39), while the 4x400 relay took eighth (3:57.52).
On the men's side, David Hille was 13th in the 200m (23.47), while Neil Slotterback was ninth in the javelin (51.45m) and Sean Welsh was 16th in the 1,500 (4:06.19). Greg Hoffman ran to a 17th-place finish in the 800m with a time of 1:56.41 and was followed by Brendan Regan in 27th (1:59.89).
In the 5,000m, Tim Quinn was ninth (14:47.43) and Jon Wilson was 12th (14:53.36).
The men's 4x400 relay finished in 11th in 3:33.07.
The gold medal for Howard in the women's javelin earned her First Team All-Atlantic 10 recognition, while Second Team All-Conference honors went to the Spiders' silver medal winners - Ney (long jump), Johnson (triple jump), Van Alstine (1,500m).
The Rhode Island men seized their seventh crown in eight seasons as the Rams edged runner-up Charlotte, 224-206. La Salle finished in third place with 136 points, followed by Massachusetts (62), Duquesne (56), Temple (49), Fordham (37), Saint Joseph's (31), Richmond (28), Saint Louis (15) and Xavier (11).
Charlotte's women amassed 203 points while Dayton and Rhode Island tied for second with 110.5 points apiece. Temple placed fourth with 108 points, followed by Richmond (68), Massachusetts (60), La Salle (57), Saint Joseph's (48), Duquesne (33.5), Saint Louis (22.5), Fordham (21) and Xavier (16).
