MANAKIN-SABOT, Va. - On the strength of two opening-round 69s from area sophomores Sam Beach and Michael Shrader, the Richmond men's golf team was tied for sixth through 18 holes at the VCU Shootout play Monday at Hermitage Country Club.
The Spiders shot a 1-over 285 in the morning round, but struggled to a 10-over-par 294 in the second round Monday afternoon to drop into 13th place heading into Tuesday morning's final round. Richmond is one shot behind 12th place East Carolina, three shots behind 11th-place UNC-Wilmington and five shots out of a tie for ninth.
"We played well in the morning, but in the afternoon our putts just weren't falling," Richmond head coach Adam Decker said. "We left a lot of shots out there on the course this afternoon, so we have to regroup and see if we can catch some teams tomorrow."
Richmond's morning round was highlighted by a pair of 2-under-par 69s from two local sophomores who had a total of two collegiate events of experience between them.
Playing in just his third collegiate event, Beach, of nearby Glen Allen, Va. shot 1-under on each nine using five birdies to card his 69. Fellow sophomore Shrader of Midlothian, Va. was playing in his first tournament with the Spiders after making the team in walk-on tryouts earlier this month and then winning a spot in the VCU Shootout through qualifying. His 69 came with one bogey and three birdies as he finished even-par on the front nine and 2-under on the back.
"Both Sam and Michael put together phenomenal rounds in the morning," Decker said. "This is a strong field and to go out there and shoot under 70 is impressive. And you can't say enough about the fact Michael did it in his first collegiate event."
Beach would shoot a 74 in the second round and is tied for 32nd through two rounds at 1-over-par 143. Shrader shot a 78 in the afternoon round and is at 5-over 147 in a tie for 53rd place.
Senior Lawrence Lessing shot a 1-over 72 in the morning and a 3-over 74 in the afternoon to sit in a tie for 47th at 4-over 146. Senior Robert Lindstrom carded a 75 in the first round and a 1-over 72 in the second to put him tied with Shrader in 53rd at 5-over. Senior Tim Courtney is tied for 68th at 7-over, after shooting a 75 in the morning and 74 in the afternoon.
