UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Richmond senior Lawrence Lessing was named Atlantic 10 Player of the Week after tying for 20th at Penn State's Rutherford Intercollegiate last week.
Lessing shot a 10-over-par 226 in the Spiders first event of the 2008-08 season. The Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y. native carded a 1-over-par 73 in the opening round, 78 in the second round and a 75 in the final round on the par-72, 7,269-yard Mystic Rock Course at Nemacolin Woodlands in Farmington, Pa.
"Lawrence has worked extremely hard on his fitness level and golf game," Richmond head coach Adam Decker said. "I am glad to see the work paying off for him and hope for him to help lead our team to great achievements this season. I know he left some shots out on the course last week and still finished in the top 20. This is exciting and should give him a confidence boost going into our next event right here in Richmond."
Lawrence is one of three Lessing brothers to play golf for the Spiders. His older brother Steve played from 1999-03 and his younger brother Jack is a freshman on the team this year.
Richmond finished 12th in Rutherford Intercollegiate, five shots out of 11th place and six shots out of 10th.
The Spiders returns to action on Monday, Sept. 29 at the VCU Shootout at Hermitage Country Club in Richmond.
