HILTON HEAD, S.C. - Sophomore Michael Shrader finished third at 4-over-par and the Richmond men's golf team finished second at the Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate, completed Tuesday.
The Spiders shot an 11-over 299 in the first round, a 17-over 305 in the second round and a 13-over 301 in the final round to finish at 905 in the spring season opener. Richmond has finished in the top-5 in its last three tournaments.
"This is a good start to the spring," Richmond head coach Adam Decker said. "We really wanted to get off to a good start and I think we accomplished our goal. We played in really difficult conditions and the guys played really well. They didn't let the conditions get to them and hung in there."
Shrader shot a 1-over-par 73 in the first round, 4-over 76 in the second and 1-under 71 in the third round to finish at 4-over 220. The 71 on the par-72, 6,828-yard course was Shrader's second sub-par round of the season. This was the third-straight tournament that Richmond has had a top-3 individual finish.
"I'm really proud of Michael for a really solid round today," Decker said. "He fought through some swing issues Monday on the 36 hole day and didn't do too badly. Then he came back with a very good round for us today."
Junior Robert Lindstrom finished fifth for his second-straight top-5 finish. Lindstrom finished at 6-over 222, shooting rounds of 73, 74 and 75. Sophomore Sam Beach tied for 23rd at 16-over 232 (77-78-77) and senior Tim Courtney tied for 29th at 233 (78-77-78). Senior Lawrence Lessing tied for 39th at 237 (76-80-81).
The Spiders return to action on March 9 at the Louisiana Classics in Lafayette, La.
