The Spiders shot a 301 in the morning round, but came back to shoot a season-low 2-under-par 286 in the afternoon. That has Richmond at 11-over 587, tied with three-time defending Atlantic 10 Champion Charlotte.
"We struggled a bit in the first round, but the second round was one of our best rounds of the year," Richmond head coach Adam Decker said. "Obviously to be tied with Charlotte, who has won the Atlantic 10 the last three years, in their own tournament, is something to be proud of. Hopefully we can keep the momentum going Tuesday."
Courtney shot a 1-over-par 73 in the first round and an even-par 72 in the second round on the 6,797-yard course to put him in a tie for 25th.
Sophomore Sam Beach is tied for 37th, three shots behind Courtney at 4-over 148 with rounds of 75 and a 1-over 73. Junior Robert Lindstrom is tied for 43rd at 6-over 149 after a 78 in the morning and a 1-under 71 in the afternoon.
Sophomore Michael Shrader is tied for 46th at 7-over 150, rebounding from an opening round 80 to shoot a 2-under 70 in the second round. Senior Lawrence Lessing is tied for 51st at 8-over 151 with rounds of 75 and 76.
This is Richmond's last tournament before the 2009 Atlantic 10 Championship, to be played April 24-26 at Mission Inn in Orlando.
