WALNUT, Calif. - Three University of Richmond track & field standouts kicked off a busy weekend for the team as freshman Katrina Spratford, junior Tim Quinn and freshman Levi Grandt raced Thursday night at the prestigious Mt. SAC Relays in Southern California.
Also this weekend, the Spiders are competing at Princeton's Larry Ellis Invitational, the Messiah College Heptathlon and at the Christopher-Newport Invitational. Stay tuned to RichmondSpiders.com throughout the weekend for a full recap of the events.
The three Spiders on the Mt. San Antonio College track each ran their first career 10K races, with Spratford running in a time of 35:54.62 to finish 25th, Quinn running in 30:21.05 to take 23rd and Grandt finishing in 30:39.31 to place 29th. The sizeabe men's field featured 55 runners.
"It was my first 10K and I really liked the race distance," said Spratford following the race. "The weather in L.A. was great and I was right where I wanted to be at the 5k and then tried to push from there."
Spratford took the race out in 5:37.4 over the first 1,600m, was clocked at 17:52.0 at the 5k-mark and crossed the five-mile marker at 28:51.2. Her 5k time over the second-half of the race was 18:02.3.
"I felt really good out there," said Quinn. "It was a great race from the start and I'm happy with my time. There were a lot of people in the race but it spread out pretty quickly and wasn't really a problem."
Quinn was clocked in 4:44.6 over the first 1,600m, crossed the half-way mark at 14:56.4 and passed the five-mile mark at 24:15.
"I'm pleased with how I did and with my time," said Grandt. "It's my first 10k on the track and I really liked it. The conditions were really good and the weather was perfect. It's my first trip to California and I'm happy with the result."
Grandt went out in 4:46.3 over the race's first 1,600m, checked in at 15:03 at the 5k mark and was clocked at 24:20 after five miles.
Action continues at the Mt. SAC Relays Friday with sophomore Nicol Traynor and junior Andrew Benford running the 5k.
