Men's Golf In Sixth After First Round Of Atlantic 10 Championship

ORLANDO, Fla. - Sophomore Michael Shrader is tied for 11th at 2-over 73 and the Richmond men's golf team is in sixth place out of 12 teams after the first round of 2009 Atlantic 10 Championship, played Friday at Mission Inn Resort.
The second round of the 54-hole tournament will be played Saturday morning with live stats available on Golfstat.com, linked here through RichmondSpiders.com.
The Spiders shot a 22-over-par 306 in the first round, which puts them 12 shots out of a second-place tie with Xavier and Temple. Richmond is seven shots behind fifth-place Rhode Island (299) and 10 shots back of fourth-place St. Bonaventure (296). Three-time defending Atlantic 10 Champion Charlotte is in first place at 2-under-par 282.
"We didn't play as well as we would have like today," Richmond head coach Adam Decker said. "We just need to work on some things this afternoon and get back out there tomorrow looking to move up the leaderboard."
Shrader shot an even-par 35 on the front nine and a 2-over 38 on the back to sit at 2-over 73 on the 6,887-yard course. He is tied for 11th, two shots out of fourth place and five shots off the leader, Charlotte's Stefan Wiedergruen (68).
"Michael played well today," Decker said. "He's put himself in a position for a good finish in his first A-10 Championship."
Senior Tim Courtney is tied for 23rd at 6-over 77 after carding a 5-over 40 on the front and 1-over 37 on the back nine.
Senior Lawrence Lessing and sophomore Sam Beach are tied for 29th at 7-over-par 78. Lessing shot a 3-over 38 on the front nine and a 4-over 40 on the back, while Beach went 7-over 42 on the front and even-par 36 on the back. Junior Robert Lindstrom is tied for 42nd at 10-over 81 after shooting a 4-over 39 on the front and 6-over 42 on the back.
