Record-Setting Tournament Gives Spiders 2nd-Place Finish At OBX Classic

POWELLS POINT, N.C. - The Richmond men's golf team set a three-round school record at 14-under-par to finish second at the Old Dominion/Outer Banks Classic at Kilmarlic Golf Club.
The Spiders shot the second-lowest single round in school history in the opening round, a 10-under-par 278, followed by a 4-over 292 in the second round and an 8-under 280 in the third round, which is the fourth-lowest round in school history.
This year's team already has shot four of the six lowest single rounds in school history in five fall tournaments. The Spiders finished in the top-5 in all five fall events, including a victory at the Richmond Intercollegiate and finished three of the tournaments under par.
The Spiders shot 27 individual rounds under par and five different players finished tournaments under par, including sophomore Nick Austin completing four of the five tournaments in the red.
Sophomore Daniel Walker shot a 3-under 69 on Tuesday to finish the tournament at 6-under 210 in a tie for fifth. Walker shot all three rounds in the red, carding a 2-under 70 in the first round and a 1-under 71 in the second round. The 2010 Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year has shot five of his nine rounds this fall under par, including four of his last five.
Sophomore Nick Austin tied for 13th at 2-under-par 214. Austin shot 2-under 70s in the first and third rounds and a 74 in the second round. Six of Austin's 12 fall rounds were below par.
Senior Michael Shrader and junior Brad Miller tied for 20th at even-par 216. Shrader, who has shot four of his last five rounds below par, shot a 2-under 70 in the first round, a 75 in the second round and a 1-under 71 in the final round. Miller shot a 74 in the first round, even-par 72 in the second round and a 2-under 70 in the final round.
Senior Sam Beach tied for 22nd at 1-over 217. He shot a 4-under 68 in the first round, followed by a 76 and 73.
Richmond opens the spring season on Feb. 21 at the Wexford Intercollegiate in Hilton Head, S.C., the first of five spring tournaments. Richmond plays in the 2011 Atlantic 10 Championship April 29-May 1 at Mission Inn Golf Club in Howey-In-The-Hills, Fla. The Spiders finished second at the 2010 A-10 Championship, the best finish since joining the league.
