UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND - University of Richmond head football coach Latrell Scott and the Spiders will host a bone marrow testing drive on Friday, April 15 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The screenings will be held at both the Heilman Dining Center and the Tyler Haynes Commons on campus.
A simple cheek swab is all that is needed to be entered into the National Bone Marrow registry. Although screening is free of charge, monetary donations are encouraged and will be accepted at Friday's screenings.
The Spiders have annually hosted testing drives in conjunction with the National Bone Marrow Program to get people tested and logged into the national registry. Villanova head coach Andy Talley has been integral in the creation of the "First and Goal" campaign to aid in recruiting potential donors in the National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP) Registry.
On any given day, more than 6,000 men, women and children are searching the NMDP Registry for a life-saving donor. These patients have leukemia, lymphoma and other life-threatening diseases that can be treated by a bone marrow or cord blood transplant. For many of these patients, a transplant may be the best and only hope of a cure. The test is a simple cheek swab -- no blood or needles are involved. The free test lasts no longer than 30 minutes which also includes registration paperwork.
Remember the next person in need of a transplant could be you or a member of your family or a friend. Please visit www.bethematchfoundation.org/goto/bethematchva for more information or to make a monetary donation online.
