WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The final day of the 46th Annual Colonial relays came to a close Saturday evening in Williamsburg, Va. The Richmond women walked away with 10th-place out of 40 teams.
"We had a lot of great performances this weekend," said women's head coach Lori Taylor. "Meaghan McGovern got us started with her win in the hammer throw on Thursday. It's her best ever series in competition. Then Nicol Traynor (3K steeple), Jill Prentice (5K) and Beth Kelly (10K) continued the level of excellence... Our athletes competed and represented our program quite well this weekend."
"The weather was tough at times, but it improved on Friday night for the distance races," said men's head coach Steve Taylor. "We had several personal bests and nearly all our team members competed hard and laid it on the line for our program."
On Saturday, senior X'auntasia Johnson finished sixth in the triple jump (11.46m), followed by sophomore Sarah Nuttycombe in 26th (10.52m).
Senior Monica Howard took fifth in the discus competition with a mark of 43.52m, while senior Heather Roush came in ninth (39.02m).
The women's 4x800m relay team came in 13th with their time of 9:18.82. The team included freshman Amanda Lineberry, freshman Alyson McGonigle, junior Andi DeFonce, and sophomore Lydia Morton.
Freshman Grace Gibson placed ninth in the women's pole vault competition (3.25m).
Junior Devin Cassels came in 12th in the men's pole vault with a mark of 4.15m.
Villanova won the women's team competition with a total of 116.20 points. Richmond's 38 points were good enough for 10th. As for the men, Bucknell took first-place with a total of 129.90 points.
"Over the next month the weather will improve and we'll need to continue to improve as we sharpen for the championship part of our season," said Lori Taylor.
Steve Taylor finished by saying, "The next two weekends are important, so we need to see the level of intensity continue to be there on every event."
The Spiders return to action next Saturday at the GMU Invitational in Fairfax, Va.
