UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND - University of Richmond men's golfer Brad Miller clinched a spot in the 2011 United States Amateur Championship in dramatic fashion Monday, and the rising senior heads to Erin Hills Golf Club August 22 to compete for a USGA National Championship.
On the first playoff hole during U.S. Amateur qualifying at Piney Branch Golf Club in Hampstead, Md. on Monday, July 25, Miller holed an 85-yard shot from the fairway for eagle to win the three-man playoff and clinch a spot at Erin Hills.
A Timonium, Md. native, Miller was fourth on the Spiders with his 71.50 stroke average in 2011. His best finish was a T-4th at the N.C. Wolfpack Spring Open, and he opened the year with a sixth-place finish at the Marshall Invitational where he carded the Spiders' low-round of the year with a first-round 66.
Miller carded a 36-hole total of 140 and was one of three qualifiers from Piney Branch, joining Jonathan Randolph (137) and Denny McCarthy (139).
Erin Hills Golf Club is located in Erin, Wis. and hosts the 2011 U.S. Amateur Championship August 22-28. The club is set to host the U.S. Open in 2017.
Richmond's last qualifier to the U.S. Amateur Championship was John Pelet in 2005.
