09/27/2011 | Men's Golf
The Spiders are 11th as a team after Monday's 36 holes, with 18 left to play Tuesday morning. Richmond shaved 10 strokes off its 295 first-round score in Monday's second round.
"We dug a pretty big hole in the first round," said head coach Adam Decker. "But we bounced back with a respectable afternoon round."
Austin leads the squad and is tied for 14th after posting rounds of 75 and 67 on the par-72, 6,955-yard layout. McDade put two even-par rounds of 72 in the books on Monday and is tied for 28th at 144.
"Nick did a nice job of turning things around and putting up a great score for us," said Decker. "I'm also extremely pleased with the play of freshman Colin McDade. He's very composed and does a great job of staying focused on executing the next shot."
Senior Brad Miller is two strokes back of McDade in a tie for 45th (74-72) and sophomore Jack Wilkes is two strokes back of Miller in a tie for 60th (74-74). Junior Daniel Walker rebounded from a tough opening-round 79 and shot 74 in the nightcap.
Junior Jack Lessing played as an individual and is tied for 80th (76-77).
Iowa State's Scott Fernandez sits nine-under par and is the individual leader, while Virginia shot 559 as a team and is three strokes clear of Virginia Tech heading to Tuesday's final round.
East Carolina (563), Iowa State (564) and Wichita State (566) round out the top five in the competitive 15-team field.
Tuesday's final round is underway at 8:45 a.m. and live scoring is available.
