CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Freshman Taylor Clevinger and sophomore Grace Gibson were stellar for the Spiders on Saturday as Richmond Track & Field wrapped up its first meet of the indoor season at UNC's Dick Taylor Invitational.
Gibson (Virginia Beach, Va./Princess Anne) headlined the second day of field action for the Spiders in Chapel Hill, recording a leap of 3.40 meters in the pole vault to reset her own school record and secure a sixth-place finish.
Clevinger (Mechanicsville, Va./St. Catherine's School) picked up right where she left off on the track, winning her heat of the 800 Meters with a time of 2:17.93 to finish third overall in the event's 35-runner field. Clevinger's teammate on Friday's winning DMR relay, sophomore Alli Mannon (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) clocked a 2:23.43 to take sixth overall in the race.
Newcomers Taylor Parson (Severn, Md./Old Mill) and Deborah Fajuyibe (Bowie, Md./Bowie) undoubtedly contributed to the Spider underclassmen's strong showing. Parson coasted to victory in her 200 Meters heat with a time of 26.14 to finish ninth overall, while Fajuyigbe crossed the tape just behind in 26.62 to take 13th.
On the men's side, junior Kyle Ragan (State College, Pa./State College) won his heat of the mile with a time of 4:37.51 to finish inside the top-20 in 19th on Saturday.
The Spiders return to the track next weekend when they travel to Blacksburg, Va., for the Hokie Invitational. The two-day meet begins on Friday in Virginia Tech's Rector Field House.
