UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond had nine of its athletic programs honored by the NCAA with Public Recognition Awards based on their most recent multi-year Academic Progress Rate (APR), as announced by the organization Wednesday.
“The recognition of our nine sports represents our highest number since the advent of the APR index,” said Assistant AD for Academics Bruce Matthews. “We're proud of our balanced achievements between our men's and women's sports. These APR achievements point to the overall academic health of our athletic program. Certainly, these academic achievements rest upon the hard work of our student-athletes, coaches, faculty and staff.”
The NCAA presents these prestigious honors annually to teams with APRs in the top-10 percent of all of Division I squads in their respective sports. The awards are based on the recent APR numbers that represent a combination of scores from the past four academic years.
Five Spider men's teams including basketball, soccer, golf, indoor and outdoor track earned public recognition. Four women's teams were honored in field hockey, women's golf, indoor and outdoor track. Richmond had eight teams honored last year. Richmond tied with Dayton for the most teams (9) recognized.
Six of the teams received perfect scores of 1000 (men's basketball, men's golf, men's indoor track, men's outdoor track, field hockey, women's golf, women's outdoor track).
The Atlantic 10 conference boasted 54 programs earning national recognition, ranking fourth in the number of teams recognized among the 32 Division I leagues. Every Atlantic 10 sport had at least one team receive public recognition.
The APR provides a real-time look at a team's academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete on scholarship. The APR accounts for eligibility, retention and graduation and provides a measure of each team's academic performance.
