Soccer At Davidson In A-10 For First Time
10/11/2014 | Women's Soccer
Richmond women's soccer puts its Atlantic 10 Conference unbeaten streak on the line in its lone match of the weekend, a road tilt at newly minted A-10 member Davidson Saturday at Alumni Stadium just outside of Charlotte. Richmond is 7-5-1, with a 1-0-1 mark in league play. The Wildcats are 4-8-1 overall, 1-1 in the A-10.
This will be the fifth meeting in the series, but the first time the two programs meet as conference opponents. Richmond is 3-0-1 against the Wildcats all-time, with a 1-0-1 mark at Davidson.
The Spiders and Wildcats met in 2008 and 2009 after a home-and-home in 1997 and 1998.
Richmond is in the midst of an offensive renaissance, leading the A-10 in goals, with 29. The Wildcats are tied for 11th in the league with just 10 goals scored, but Davidson is tied for fourth with 16 goals allowed, while the Spiders have allowed a league-worst 27 goals.
The Spiders litter the offensive charts individually, with redshirt freshman Meaghan Carrigan (Greenville, South Carolina) leading the league with 11 goals. Junior Ashley Riefner (Mechanicsville, Virginia) tying for third with seven goals, but sitting third in the league with 21 points thanks to seven assists. Junior Shannon Colligan (Greenwich, Connecticut) leads the A-10 with 11 assists, just two shy of the single-season school mark.
In the opening weekend, Davidson went on the road to St. Bonaventure and Duquesne, beating the Bonnies 2-0, but falling in the second overtime 1-0 to the Dukes. The Spiders tied the Dukes last Friday 2-2, but took out St. Bonaventure at home 5-0 in the team's first shutout of the season. The five goals was a Robins Stadium record for UR.
The Wildcats are led by keeper Rachel Locke, as she sits seventh in the league with a 1.18 goals-against average. Her 73 saves are tops in the conference ledger and her four shutouts are tied for forth. Davidson does not possess a goal-scorer in the league's top 10. Stephanie Piperno leads the team with three goals this season.
The Davidson contest starts a three-match road trip, the Spiders' longest stretch away from home in conference action this season. Richmond will actually stay in town for their next road game, next Friday at VCU at 7:30 p.m.
