Soccer Faces Tough Tests At VCU & GW

Richmond soccer finishes its road Atlantic 10 Conference road schedule this weekend with a pair of matches, across town at VCU Friday night and concluding the docket Sunday at George Washington.
The VCU contest is part of a doubleheader with the men, pushing the women's game to a start scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Sports Backers Stadium.
The Spiders are one of two unbeaten teams in the Atlantic 10 through the first two weekends, sitting at 2-0-1 in the league and in second place. Richmond is 8-5-1 overall, one of just three A-10 squads with as many as eight victories. The Spiders have scored 30 goals to lead the league.
Redshirt freshman Meaghan Carrigan (Greenville, South Carolina) is tied for the league lead with 11 total goals, while junior Shannon Colligan (Greenwich, Connecticut) leads the league with 11 assists.
Richmond freshman keeper Katie Brennan (Fairfield, Connecticut) has started in goal for UR's last four contests, and her defense has helped her remain unbeaten at 3-0-1. The team has posted back-to-back shutouts and has not allowed a goal in the last 226:27 of season play and she is the reigning Atlantic 10 Conference Rookie of the Week for her efforts.
VCU enters in a tie for third in the league at 2-1, with an overall mark of 6-4-3. The Rams are in the middle of the pack in the league rankings in goals (19) and goals allowed (1.46 per match). Maren Johansen leads the team and is tied for seventh in the league with seven goals this season and keeper Emma Kruse is ninth in the league with 46 saves.
The Spiders are 8-7-2 all-time against the Rams, with the teams an even 2-2-1 against one another since 2008. Richmond is 3-4-2 at VCU in the all-time series.
George Washington sits at 8-3-1 overall, with a 1-1-1 mark in league play, in a four-way tie for sixth place. The Colonials have found the back of the net 21 times this season, but lead the league in goals against average, giving up less than a goal per contest, 0.81, allowing 10 total. MacKenzie Cowley leads GW with six goals scored this season, while keeper Miranda Horn is second in the league in both goals against (0.85) and save percentage (nine goals allowed and 48 saves for an .842 mark).
The Spiders are 7-4-1 in the all-time series since the Spiders joined the A-10 in 2001. Richmond is 4-3-1 at GW and has won five of the last seven in the series. That contest starts at 3:30 p.m.
