A first-half goal from senior Ashley Williams (Williamsburg, Virginia / Warhill HS) got Richmond in front, but two VCU goals, including the game-winner with 1:15 remaining in the second half eliminated the seven-seeded Spiders in the quarterfinals of the Atlantic 10 Championship on Thursday night at Baujan Field at the University of Dayton.
The Spiders finish the season at 9-9-2 overall, finishing with 37 goals, tied for the fourth-most in program history for a single season.
VCU continues on to face the winner of Dayton and Saint Joseph's, the final quarterfinal of day one in Dayton.

“It's sad for our season to end right now,” said Richmond head coach Peter Albright. “This is the finest group of young ladies I've been around. We played some of our finest soccer of the year in the first half, but we missed some chances that could have put the game away. The quality of the effort was exceptional. I felt this team was good enough to win the championship, but we had to put goals away when we had chances. VCU came out and played very physical after halftime and we did not match that.”
Williams found the back of the net in the 14th minute. A-10 Rookie of the Year Meaghan Carrigan (Greenville, South Carolina) sent a pass up the left sideline for First-Team All-A-10 forward Ashley Riefner (Mechanicsville, Virginia / Atlee HS), who sent it across to Williams, who sent it near post past the VCU keeper for the game's first score. It was her first goal of the year in her final game in UR red.
The assist gave Riefner an even nine to go with her nine goals. Carrigan's assist was her fifth to give her a team-best total of 33 points.
The Spiders held a 5-1 shots advantage in the opening half, possessing the ball beautifully for the majority of the first 45 minutes.
The score remained 1-0 Spiders until Brianne Moore was able to go far post right in front of the net for the equalizer.
The tight contest continued until the final minutes of regulation, when Jackie Ernest got loose on a good pass from Kailyn Slade to poke it in and win the game.
VCU keeper Emma Kruse recorded four saves in the win (10-4-5). Spider freshman Katie Brennan (Fairfield, Connecticut) took the loss, dropping her record to 4-4-2. She did not record a save.
“Right now, I am thinking of our five seniors, some of whom hardly played at all this year, because of all of the things they did to help us become a better team this season.”
The Spiders set the school record with 46 assists this season.
