STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – Richmond incoming freshman Matthew Lowe broke the 39-year-old course record at LaTourette Golf Course with a 9-under 63 in the second round of the NYC Amateur.
The Farmingdale, Long Island native birdied nine holes on the par-72, 6,708-yard course, on his way to finishing second in the event.
The previous record of 64 was set in 1975 by former Silver Lake professional Eddie Sorge, who was on hand Sunday.
"I have played here before as far back as when I was 11 in junior events and I love the course," said Lowe, who is well known for his ball striking in the Met area with victories in Long Island Amateur events.
Lowe finished with a 6-under 210, one shot behind Penn State rising senior Xander MacDonald Smith. Lowe shot a 74 in the opening round and a 73 in the final round.
