Celebration Of Life Service Saturday For Lewis And Doyle
07/29/2014 | General, Women's Basketball, Women's Swimming & Diving
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond will be holding a Celebration of Life Service to remember Ginny Doyle and Natalie Lewis this Saturday, September 27, at 10 a.m. at Cannon Chapel located on campus.
Doyle and Lewis were beloved members of the Richmond women's basketball staff as well as Richmond alumnae, who tragically died in an accident on May 9, 2014.
The service will include a procession of symbols, remembrances from family and friends, music, and a slideshow. The Doyle and Lewis families will attend, and a reception will follow in the Alice Haynes Room. The service will last approximately an hour and fifteen minutes, and overflow seating will be available in Camp Concert Hall.
Doyle spent the last 15 seasons as an assistant women's basketball coach with her most recent title, associate head coach, under Michael Shafer.
A 1992 Richmond graduate, Doyle rewrote the record books, as she was a phenomenal free throw shooter. Her senior season, she set an NCAA record for both men and women by making 66 consecutive free throws. The accomplishment earned her dubious recognition from CBS college basketball analyst Billy Packer, which led to a free-throw shootout that was no contest for Doyle, making all 20 of her free throws and earning praise from the previously-doubting Packer.
Doyle was hired by Bob Foley at Richmond in 1999 and stayed through two more coaches, JoAnne Boyle, now the head coach at Virginia, and Shafer.
Lewis was a four-year letterwinner on the swimming and diving team and just completed her second season on the women's basketball staff as the director of operations. A two-time captain, Lewis helped the Spiders to three swimming & diving championship seasons.
