ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Spider women's golf team posted three strong rounds at the Navy Fall Invitational this weekend, placing sixth out of 15 teams that took on the Naval Academy Golf Course in Annapolis, Md.
The sixth-place finish is the best team finish in head coach Ali Wright's young tenure, and highest finish in the last seven tournaments. The Spiders finished in front of Patriot League rival Navy and just two places behind Lehigh of the Patriot League.
"Playing a practice round and three competitive rounds on the course where we will be playing the Patriot League Championship was a positive learning experience for our team," Wright said. "Jessica Lydia had a strong showing in her second tournament back after significant time off due to injury. Tiarra Baskerville tied her collegiate low round and Maria Pons Cano also contributed to our team finish in her first collegiate start. We are looking forward to practicing and preparing for the second half of our fall schedule."
Lydia led the way for the Spiders for the second-straight week, shooting a 232 (+16) to place fifth overall, her second career top-10 finish.
She recovered from an 80 (+8) in her first round to shoot a pair of 76 (+4)'s in the final two rounds on Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning.
Senior transfer Sara Diaz shot a 237 (+21), which tied her for 14th overall, her first top-20 finish at Richmond. She shot a 76 (+4) in round one, followed by rounds of 82 (+10) and 79 (+7).
Junior Kira Kuhnert shot a 250 (+44) through three rounds with an 80 (+8), standing as her best round.
Baskerville carded a 253 (+47) to round out Richmond's scorers, while Pons Cano saw her first action for Richmond with a 257 (+51).
Richmond will head south to North Carolina for the Lady Pirate Intercollegiate on Oct. 13-14.
