Jim Miller, who helped lay the foundations for athletics excellence for generations to come at the University of Richmond, is about to embark on a new journey Oct. 21 -- retirement.
For twelve years, Miller served as athletic director for the university. During his time as AD, student-athletes performed with national distinction in the classroom, on the field, court, track and in the pool.
Among the successes during Miller's tenure as Richmond's director of athletics:
· Spearheading the move to the nationally-recognized Atlantic 10 Conference as a full member in 2001.
· Three men's basketball NCAA appearances, including the Sweet 16 in 2011.
· A national championship in football in 2008 and four conference football titles.
· Bringing Spider football to campus after 81 years off campus, with the opening of Robins Stadium in 2010.
· 44 league titles among 12 sports.
“I am grateful to Jim for his leadership and service to the University of Richmond,” said Ed Ayers, Richmond's president. “I look forward to seeing Jim at many Spider sporting events in the years to come.”
Miller also served on various NCAA and conference committees, including the NCAA FCS Football Committee, NCAA Leadership Council and chairman of the Atlantic 10 Finance Committee.
“Jim's impact on this department – staff, student-athletes, coaches, alumni and our fan base - is immeasurable and is impossible to quantify," said Director of Athletics Keith Gill, who succeeded Miller in 2012. "Under his leadership there have been so many milestones, accomplishments and championships. I would like to add my congratulations to Jim on behalf of the athletic department for his outstanding service to the University of Richmond and Richmond Athletics.”
Since 2012, Miller has served as assistant to the president for athletic advancement, focused on athletic alumni relations and raising funds to address athletic priorities, including goals contained in both The Richmond Promise and athletic strategic plan.
“I greatly enjoyed working with Jim both in his role as athletic director and in his current role,” said Tom Gutenberger, vice president for Advancement. “Jim was an effective advocate for student-athletes and a great partner in engaging alumni and those interested in Spider athletics in the life of the University.”
Before joining Richmond, Miller was associate athletic director at NC State University. He has been actively involved in college athletics for more than 30 years. He played basketball and baseball at Old Dominion University.
