Soccer Home Again For Weekend Pair
09/25/2014 | Women's Soccer
After securing two home wins last weekend, the Richmond Spiders soccer program continues its home stand this weekend with 4 p.m. matches Friday against Saint Joseph's and Sunday against James Madison at Robins Stadium. The Spiders sit at 5-4 on the season.
Last weekend, the Spiders won a pair of 3-2 contests, Friday over Princeton and Sunday against Old Dominion. Friday night, junior Ashley Riefner (Mechanicsville, Virginia / Atlee HS) set the team's season high with three goals in the win over the Tigers. Sunday was the first time this season that the Spiders won a match in which different players scored all the goals. The two-match win streak is the second of the season for UR. The Spiders are second in the A-10 in goals, with 17, and lead the league with 22 assists. Junior Shannon Colligan (Greenwich, Connecticut) leads the A-10 with seven assists. Richmond has already outscored last season's squad.
Saint Joseph's sits at 6-4 and just had a five-match win streak snapped in a 1-0 Sunday home loss to Columbia. Aside of a 4-1 win in the season opener at Pacific, the last nine Hawks matches have been won by the team that scores first, because they were all shutouts. In their five-match win streak, the Hawks were not scored upon, a span of 474 minutes, 21 seconds. The Hawks have scored just 10 goals in 10 contests, allowing 12 for the season. Emily Gingrich has six of the team's 10 goals and has taken nearly 42 percent of the squad's shots attempted. She leads the league with 49 shots and is tied for second in goals so far in 2014. The Spiders are 7-3 in the all-time series, including a 5-1 mark at home. Richmond has won the last meetings. This is the first time they two programs will play that does not count as a conference contest (conference play begins next weekend for the Atlantic 10).
James Madison sits at 5-4 on the year, though the Dukes have lost three of their last four contests. JMU will play at Towson to begin CAA conference play Friday. Richmond and JMU have split their last six meetings, and JMU owns a 14-8-1 advantage in the all-time series. The Dukes are just 1-3 away from home so far this season. They also have just 10 goals scored this season, but have out shot opponents 129-82 in nine matches. Sydney Braun-McLeod leads the team with three goals scored.
Admission is free at Robins Stadium for soccer. The contests will be streamed via SpiderTV on the A-10 Digital Network.
