Late Goal Gives SJU Women's Soccer Win At UR
10/16/2015 | Women's Soccer
Richmond women's soccer got an early goal, but gave up a home contest to Saint Joseph's 2-1 Thursday night at Robins Stadium in Atlantic 10 Conference action.
Richmond falls to 4-8-1 overall, 2-2-1 in the A-10. SJU improves to 8-6 on the season, 2-3 in league games.
In a mirror image of the game at Saint Louis exactly one week ago, junior Hunter Rooney (Littleton, Colorado) scored first on her only shot of the game in the 20th minute. A pair of passes up the sideline from Lindsay Egbers (Clifton, Virginia / Centreville HS) and sophomore Lexi Prillaman (Magnolia, Delaware) led to a cross in front, which was poked in near post by Rooney for her second goal of the season.
“We work on finding patterns in training and finding people in seams and we did that with Hunter for the goal,” said UR head coach Peter Albright.
Just under 15 minutes later, the Hawks got on the board when the team's leading scorer, Emily Gingrich, knocked in her eighth of the year on a pass from Janine Mueller to the top of the 18, and she fired it far post for the tying score.
The score remained tied at one into the half. The stats were even, with Richmond getting one more shot (7-6) and Saint Joseph's taking one more corner kick (2-1) and having one more save (2-1) than the Spiders.
The second half saw the game open up a bit more, with the Spiders taking 13 shots to SJU's nine in the period.
The game appeared to head to overtime until a two-pass sequence with just under four minutes remaining set up a brilliant cross to the front of the net, where Michaela Finneyfrock deflected the ball in from her waist from point-blank range for the game-winner. It was her second goal of the season and first game-winning goal of the year.
“This loss is our own doing,” added Albright. “We didn't take care of the ball and had too many turnovers. We were not able to keep the game going in our direction. We struggled to dictate our style from about 40 minutes on tonight. Now we are in the middle of chasing points and getting into the tournament. We have to regroup and get ready for GW on Sunday.”
Richmond keeper Katie Brennan (Fairfield, Connecticut) registered three saves in the loss (2-6-1). Hawks keeper Allison Ebling made six saves in the win (7-3).
Richmond hosts conference unbeaten George Washington Sunday at 1 p.m. to conclude the weekend home stand.
