11/06/2015 | Women's Golf
Richmond sophomore Elsa Diaz (San Antonio, Texas) was named the Corvias Patriot League Women's Golfer of the Month this week.
Diaz helped Richmond to its first invitational title since the spring of 2013 as she came in fifth place out of 50 golfers at the Whistling Straits Intercollegiate on Oct. 12-13 to lead the Spiders to the victory in the nine-team event. Diaz fired a three-round score of 243 (79-78-86) to finish just two shots off second place and help the Spiders win by 13 strokes. She also shot a 10-over 226 at the Cardinal Cup on Oct. 19-20 to tie for 23rd place in the 81-golfer field and once again land as Richmond's top finisher.
In two tournaments played for in October, Diaz averaged 78.2 per round, with a low round for the year of one-over 73 at Louisville. Her 10-over score at the Cardinal Cup was also her best finish to par for her career. The Top 10 finish was her first of the season and third of her young career. She finished seventh in last year's Patriot League Championships, also UR's low scorer of the tournament.
