NCAA Division I Council Elects Keith Gill as Vice Chair

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Richmond Athletic Director Keith Gill has been elected as the Vice Chair of the Division I Council as announced by the NCAA on Wednesday February 4, 2015. Gill's appointment to the Council is a four-year term representing the Atlantic 10 Conference.
“Keith is a well-respected administrator nationally and it is a real honor for Richmond and the Atlantic 10 that he has been selected as Vice Chair of the Council,” stated A-10 Commissioner Bernadette V. McGlade. “Keith will serve the association well.”
In the recently redesigned Division I governance structure, the Council was formed to conduct the daily business of the 345-member division. During his two-year term as Vice Chair, Gill will serve with Chair, Jim Phillips of Northwestern University to lead the 40-person membership-driven Council in its duties. The Council is charged with leading the full NCAA membership through a transition from the “old cabinet governance system“ to a governance system designed to be more nimble and responsive to the needs, processes, and rules that impact enhanced student-athlete welfare, championship opportunities and financial oversight. At the conclusion of the first full national meeting this week, the Council unanimously supported a newly-developed governance substructure which will serve as the foundation for Division I decision making in the future.
"I am humbled to serve the NCAA and our student-athletes in this new and important role,” Gill said. “The Division I Council is committed to the welfare and development of all student-athletes and I am honored to be a part of this process and to represent the Atlantic 10 Conference and the University of Richmond."
Gill represents the Atlantic 10 on the Council and is one of three Division I Council members from the A-10. McGlade is also a voting member, representing the voice of Commissioners from conferences within the Division I subdivision.
Duquesne senior women's soccer player Devon Tabata is also a voting member of the Council, representing the voice of the student-athlete. She is one of just two student-athletes on the Council and was selected because of her position as vice-chair of the Division I Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).
