ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Freshman Elsa Diaz and junior Jessica Lydia carded top-10 finishes at the Patriot League Championships at the Naval Academy Golf Course in Annapolis, Md.
The pair earned All-Patriot League Second Team honors for their finishes. UR finished fourth overall (323-325-334=982, +118), just four strokes behind host Navy. Boston University won the team title.
In the school's first season in the Patriot League, UR improved over last year's eighth-place finish at the CAA Championship.
“We didn't finish the tournament like we knew we could,” head coach Ali Wright said. “But overall this season was a big step forward for our program. We had a number of good rounds this season and we set high expectations for ourselves. We're going to continue to improve and work toward fulfilling those goals next year.”
Elsa Diaz entered the final round in eighth place but moved up a spot for a seventh-place finish, shooting 77-82-80=239 (+23). She also led all competitors in Par 5 holes, averaging 4.89 strokes per hole.
Lydia finished ninth with a final scorecard of 82-80-80=242 (+26). She was third overall in Par 3 scoring (3.33).
Senior Sara Diaz shot a higher round on Sunday, finishing up at 81-80-88=249 (+33) and placing 18th overall. The elder Diaz was tied for first overall in Par 3 holes (3.11). Kira Kuhnert was right behind her, carding an 84-83-87=254 (+38) and placing 20th.
Maria Pons Cano shot an 83-87-87=257 (+41) and Alicia Reggiannini finished at 87-92-89=268 (+52).
“I'm especially thankful to Sara Diaz for spending her final year in college with us at Richmond,” Wright said. “She came here to play golf with her sister, Elsa, but after this year I think we all became sisters. This was a special season for this group.”
