05/12/2015 | General
Richmond's Keith Gill has been named an Athletics Director of the Year by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA), the organization announced today.
The award recognizes the efforts of athletics directors at all levels for their commitment and positive contributions to student-athletes, campuses and their surrounding communities. Gill is now in his third year as AD at Richmond, following a five-year stint at American University.
“I am honored to be named a 2015 NACDA Athletic Director of the Year,” said Gill. “Although given to an individual, this award is the recognition of the hard work and success of the students, coaches, staff, alumni and faculty that comprise the University of Richmond community. This is an honor shared by everyone who is a member of the Spider family.”
Among the criteria for the award are service as an AD for a minimum of five academic years; demonstration of commitment to higher education and student-athletes; continuous teamwork, loyalty and excellence; and the ability to inspire individuals or groups to high levels of accomplishments.
The Spiders won conference titles in swimming & diving and field hockey in 2014-15, while also sending the football, men's basketball and women's basketball teams to postseason play, where each advanced in tournament competition.
Academically, 230 Richmond student-athletes achieved a cumulative or term grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or higher after the fall semester of 2014. More than 63 percent of UR student-athletes have a 3.0 GPA or better, and 13 of the 17 teams have GPAs over 3.0 as a unit.
Gill joins Richard Johnson (Wofford), Justin Sell (South Dakota State) and Tim Wabler (Dayton) as winners at the Football Championship Subdivision level. The awards will be presented June 17 during a luncheon at NACDA's 50th Annual Convention in Orlando, Florida.
