06/19/2015 | Women's Track & Field
INDIANAPOLIS – University of Richmond Spiders senior Alyson McGonigle has been nominated for the 2015 NCAA Woman of the Year Award, the NCAA announced on Friday.
McGonigle is one of 480 female student-athletes nominated for the award – the most in the history of the program. Now in its 25th year, the Woman of the Year award honors graduating female college athletes who have exhausted their eligibility and distinguished themselves throughout their collegiate careers in academics, athletics, service and leadership.
McGonigle had a terrific career for the Spiders, earning a total of six Atlantic 10 Championships in track and field. This past season, McGonigle was a member of the outdoor champion 4x800 relay team.
In 2013, McGonigle won the indoor title in the 800m and was a member of the winning indoor champion 4x800 relay team and distance medley relay. Later that year, she won gold as part of the 4x800 relay team in outdoor competition. In 2015, McGonigle was also a part of the A-10 indoor champion distance medley relay team.
McGonigle earned a spot in the 2013 NCAA East Regional, competing in the 1500 meters.
Off the track, McGonigle has a passion for service, working with as a counselor at Camp PALS, a one-week overnight camp for young adults with Down syndrome. She has also spent time at the Little Sisters of the Poor St. Joseph's Home in nearby Henrico, Va.
Of the nominees, 207 competed in Division I, 93 competed in Division II and 180 competed in Division III athletics. The NCAA encourages member schools to honor its top graduating female student-athletes each year by submitting their names for consideration for the Woman of the Year award.
Then, conferences assess each nominee's eligibility and select up to two conference nominees. All conference nominees are forwarded to the Woman of the Year selection committee, which chooses the top 30 honorees – 10 from each division.
From the top 30, the selection committee determines the top three nominees from each division and announces the top nine finalists in September. The NCAA Committee on Women's Athletics then chooses from among those nine to determine the 2015 NCAA Woman of the Year.
The 2015 NCAA Woman of the Year winner will be announced, and the Top 30 honorees celebrated, at the annual award ceremony Oct. 18 in Indianapolis.
