WATERVILLE, IRELAND - The Richmond men's golf team takes off for a Fall Break trip to Ireland on Thursday.
The Spiders will travel to Waterville, Ireland for the Waterville Intercollegiate on Sunday and Monday. The event will take place at the Waterville Golf Links, one of Ireland's top-ranked golf courses on the Ring of Kerry along the western coast.
Richmond will compete against Rutgers, Davidson and University College Cork in the two-day event. The men will have a rare opportunity to compete alongside Richmond's women's team who is also making the trip and playing in the tournament.
The Spiders are coming off a fantastic season-opening performance at the VCU Shootout. Richmond finished in seventh place and carded the second-best team round in school history, tallying a -9 (279).
UR was led by senior Atlantic 10 Golfer of the Week Keegan Hoff. Hoff shot 66 (-6) in the final round, the fourth-best round in school history. His tournament score of -6 (138) earned him an 11th place overall finish.
Junior Matthew Lowe carded consecutive even par rounds of 72, while senior Mark Reilly shot his lowest-career tournament score of even par (144).
This season, the Spiders will have talented depth in the underclass as sophomore Ben Wanichek and freshmen Zack Justice, Andrew Sciaretta and Tim Graham have all competed fiercely in team qualifying. Justice shot a 70 (-2) in his second round at VCU, while Sciaretta shot a 73 (+1) in his final round.
Richmond competed in the same tournament in Waterville back in 2012, as the NCAA allows international travel every four years. UR placed second that season with a team score of 626 (+50).
