02/24/2016 | Men's Golf
WESTON, Fla. - The Richmond Spider men's golf team played up to their preseason ranking by battling top-seeded VCU to the very end of the championship round in the season-opening Atlantic 10 Match Play championships in Weston, Fla.
The Spiders advanced through the 13-team field with a 4-2 win over Saint Joseph's and 4.5-1.5 win over Davidson in action on Monday afternoon.
Against the Hawks, John David Sanderson, Ben Wanichek, Keegan Hoff and Matthew Lowe all emerged victorious, while Sanderson, Hoff, Mark Reilly and David Germann picked up wins against Davidson.
In Tuesday's championship round against VCU, Sanderson won his match early, as he won by going up six holes with five to go. Reilly also defeated his opponent one up to give the Spiders an early advantage off the first two seeds.
Wanichek and Hoff then came just one hole short and then Germann and Lowe's rounds were delayed by weather, before eventually falling to give VCU the 4-2 decision.
The Spiders head back to Florida on March 12 for the Mission Inn Spring Spectacular at Howey-in-the-Hills.
