LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Richmond women's golf team won the 2016 Patriot League title by six strokes on Sunday afternoon at the Bucknell Golf Course.
The win marked Richmond's first conference championship since the program began in 2002-03. The Spiders earned the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Regionals.
“This was a full team win,” head coach Ali Wright said. “We had crucial rounds from all six players, and we responded in the final holes when the pressure was on. Credit to Lehigh and Boston University for really playing well and pushing us. We showed a lot of heart to compete so hard up and down our lineup. We are so excited to represent the University of Richmond in the NCAA's.”
Richmond senior Jessica Lydia earned Patriot League First Team honors as she finished third overall with a score of 227 (+17). Lydia held on with a final round of 78, helping the Spiders hold off runs from Lehigh and Boston University.
Freshman Sophie DiPetrillo shot 74 in the final round to finish tied for fourth with a final score of 229 (+19), and earned All-Patriot League first team honors. She had two big birdies in the back nine as the score tightened.
Fellow freshman Annie Collom finished at 230 (+20) with a final round of 77. She was named to the Patriot League All-Second Team after finishing in a tie for seventh overall.
Senior Elizabeth Rubino was a huge part of Richmond's win on the final day, posting the team's third-best round after entering the weekend as the sixth seed. Rubino shot 75, including just two-over on the front nine.
Freshman Isabella Rusher placed 15th overall with a final score of 75-82-78=235 (+25). Sophomore Elsa Diaz carded an 83-77-81=241 (+31) on the tournament.
Richmond head coach Ali Wright was named Patriot League Coach of the Year in her second season at the helm. She helped the Spiders become the fourth different team in the last four years to win the Patriot League Championship.
The Spiders will become one of 72 teams selected to one of four NCAA Regionals. The NCAA Selection show will air live on the Golf Channel at 6 p.m.
