
Men's Golf Places Second At Atlantic 10 Championships

ORLANDO - The Richmond Spiders put up a valiant fight on the final day, but ultimately finished second at the 2016 Atlantic 10 Championships. It marked the third consecutive year that Richmond has placed second out of 11 teams at the tournament.
UR tallied a final round of 297 to finish at 889 (+25) overall. The Spiders were just seven strokes behind VCU who took the team title.
"I thought that we really competed hard today and throughout this tournament," head coach Adam Decker said. "We gave ourselves an opportunity to take the title and that's what you want to see from the guys. I'm proud of the way that we've successfully built this program and the way that we've represented the University of Richmond."
Senior David Germann was named to the Atlantic 10 All-Conference team after carding a team-best round of 72 (E). He finished the tournament at 219 (+3), tying for third in the overall standings. It marked Germann's second third-place finish at the Championships after he placed third in his sophomore season. He placed in the top 10 in all of his four collegiate seasons at UR.
Sophomore Matthew Lowe was also selected to the Atlantic 10 All-Conference team. Lowe finished in a tie for seventh overall, shooting a 223 (+7) for the tournament. Lowe now has a season stroke average of 71.61, which leads the team and currently ranks first all-time in the Richmond record books.
Freshman Ben Wanichek posted the second-best score among all true freshman in the tournament. He tied for seventh with a 223 (+7), including a 74 in the final round. It marked his best three-round tournament score this year.
Junior Keegan Hoff shot a 74 in the final round to finish in a tie for 14th overall at 225 (+9). Senior John David Sanderson completed his career with a final round of 77. He shot 248 (+32) for the tournament.
Richmond head coach Adam Decker was named Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year after the tournament. It marked his second career Coach of the Year award after earning the honor in 2010.
The season continues for the Spiders as Lowe will be a strong candidate for inclusion in the NCAA Regionals as an individual at-large selections. The complete NCAA men's tournament field will be announced on Thursday morning at 9:30 a.m. on the Golf Channel.
