Richmond, Va. – A familiar voice to sports fans around the Capital City is making a return to the airwaves with his own sports talk show beginning this summer. Bob Black will bring “The Sports Huddle” to ESPN 950 & SPORTS FM 100.5 from 3 to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday starting July 11. The veteran, award-winning “Voice of the Richmond Spiders” for more than 30 years, Black will reprise his role as a daily talk show host – a position he held from 1997 through 2001 in Richmond - while continuing in his longtime role broadcasting Spider games.
“I'm excited and grateful for the opportunity to return to sports talk radio,” says Black. “A lot has changed since I last regularly hosted a show, both in the broadcast business and the sports world, so I feel like a rookie again. This wouldn't have happened without the support from Greg Burton, ESPN 950 and the University of Richmond. And, I'm not quitting my day job, just adding to it.”
Greg Burton, who hosts “Hardly Workin' with Greg Burton” each afternoon, was promoted in May to the Director of Communications & Engagement at The Center for Sport Leadership at VCU. His new responsibilities will still allow him to be part of the station lineup from 4 to 6 p.m.
Station program director Mitchell Bradley says, “Everyone at the station is thrilled Greg still has the opportunity to be on the air at ESPN 950. We're also excited about the future and adding a four-time Virginia Sportscaster of the Year to our already powerful local sports talk roster.”
Black continues to say, “I anticipate this being a fast-paced, guest-driven program, but also with great listener interaction, which these days, means more than just phone calls. I'm looking forward to exchanging ideas and opinions with listeners and fans of all sports and all teams.”
Black will also continue his fulltime role as Director of Broadcast & News Content with University of Richmond athletics. He has been behind the microphone for every NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament game that Richmond has played, including the 1988 and 2011 Sweet 16 appearances, while also calling the Spider football team's run to the 2008 National Championship, and the baseball team's appearance in the NCAA Super Regional in 2002.
ESPN 950 and SPORTS FM 100.5 are available via terrestrial radio, online at espn950am.com plus the ESPN 950 mobile app – available for Android and iPhone. The station also announced earlier this year its new partnership with AudioNow, providing around the clock call-to-listen access at (712) 770-9500.
