Spiders Overcome Albany in Double-Overtime, 41-38
10/07/2017 | Football
Quarterback Kyle Lauletta led the charge in more ways than one. He not only threw for 353 yards and three touchdowns but he also nearly led the team in rushing, gaining 19 yards on seven carries to go with a rushing score. His three passing touchdowns give him 62 for his career, leaving him atop the all-time program record book in that category. This game marks his fifth-straight 300-yard passing game and 13th for his career; both program records.
While no receiver eclipsed the century mark, Tyler Wilkins did manage to collect 97 yards through the air on six catches as one of five targets to gain at least 30 yards receiving.
On the defensive side of the ball, Justin Rubin was the lone Spider to collect double-digit tackles (12) but the defensive line was the highlight machine this afternoon. That unit piled up seven total sacks, a season-high, led by Andrew Clyde and Colby Ritten, both of whom had two. Brandon Waller added 1.5, Maurice Jackson had one and Trey Moore contributed 0.5.
Albany took control of the ball on the first possession of the game and marched down the field deep into Spider territory before the defense locked up and forced a fourth-and-6. The Great Danes attempted a 37-yard field goal that missed its mark to turn the ball over to Richmond. From that point forward however, each side punted away the remaining possessions to leave the game scoreless at the end of the first quarter.
Richmond forced an Albany punt to begin the second quarter but followed up with a punt of its own to set up the first touchdown drive of the afternoon. The Great Danes started with the ball at the 9:38 mark and drove 79 yards to take the 7-0 lead on a 30-yard pass from Will Brunson to Donovan McDonald.
Lauletta and Co. didn't take long to answer. Deontez Thompson rushed for one yard, then Lauletta hit Collins for a 52-yard gain; the longest reception of Collins' career; before finding Wilkins in the end zone on the third play of the drive to knot the score. To score that touchdown, Wilkins battled the defensive back and corralled the tipped ball to secure the catch.
Albany answered to retake the lead but once again, one of the great quarterbacks in Richmond history was up to the task. Lauletta completed four-straight passes to cover 64 yards before taking a direct snap and powering his way into the end zone, breaking a pair of tackles to tie the game with less than a minute remaining in the half. Jarriel Jordan sent this game to the locker room with an interception as the game clock expired.
The Spiders punted away after a three-and-out to start the second half. Albany took the ball with 13:29 to go in the quarter and held it for over six minutes, marching all the way down to the Richmond eight-yard line before settling for a field goal to take a three-point lead, 17-14.
After trading punts, Richmond took over with 3:03 left in the third and needed just one play; a 64-yard bomb from Lauletta to Simpson, and 12 seconds to take a 21-17 lead. At that point in the game, Richmond's trio of touchdown drives had only taken 2:58, total, off the game clock.
Albany answered the bell with back-to-back touchdown drives with a Richmond punt in-between to move ahead, 31-21, with 13:38 left in the ball game.
Richmond began its next drive with a Thompson rush that gained ten yards followed up by a 16-yard toss to Brissett. The Spiders made their way into the red zone where the drive ultimately stalled as a result of three incomplete passes from the Albany 16. Griffin Trau came on and buried a 33-yard field goal to cut the deficit to just seven with 8:22 to play.
The Spiders forced a three-and-out and Albany punted away with 2:19 having come off the game clock. Richmond took over at the Albany 46 and rode the arm of Lauletta all the way down to the three-yard line where he took the snap on a designed rollout and found Brissett in the back of the end zone for the game-tying score. The defense then held Albany and regulation expired with this one knotted at 31.
For the second-straight year these two programs would do battle in overtime. Albany won the toss and opted to go on defense first, giving the Spiders the first shot at putting points on the board. The offense needed just four plays to score a touchdown and take a seven-point lead.
Albany answered quickly, scoring in just three plays, which would leave the Spider defense on the field for double-overtime. As are the rules in college football, the possessions flip.
Richmond kept the Great Danes from getting a first down, highlighted by a sack from Trey Moore and Brandon Waller. The Albany kicker lined up for the go-ahead field goal and as the ball was snapped, Daniel Jones burst through the line and got a hand on the ball to block the kick, turning it back over to the Richmond offense.
The Spiders also failed to collect a first down, gaining eight yards to set up a 34-yard field goal on fourth down. Trau lined up and buried the game-winner to knock off the Great Danes in overtime for the second-consecutive season, 41-38.
After enjoying a full month free of travel the Spiders will head north up I-95 to visit Towson (2-3, 0-2 CAA) next weekend (Oct. 14). Kickoff from Towson is scheduled for 4 p.m.
