The Richmond Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (S.A.A.C.) is extremely excited to be able to partner with student-athletes across the country for the NCAA Diversity and Inclusion social media campaign. Throughout the week, you will be reading our stories and hearing our voices in various forms through the S.A.A.C. social media accounts.
This campaign and our participation this year show how we continue to grow, and in which direction. "Athletes Supporting Athletes" is our motto, and this can be done in so many ways. Highlighting our student-athletes' backgrounds, cultures, ethnicities, and more is one way we hope to show our support this week. With Spiders from all over the world, one of our goals this semester is to make each and every one of them feel welcomed and included on this campus. The Robins Center should be a home for us, and I would argue that we are making changes to help encourage this.
At our first event this school year, S.A.A.C member and diversity and inclusion advocate, Jaide Hinds-Clarke, introduced the freshmen student-athletes to an eye-opening exercise that placed the athletes in groups depending on their home state or country. As we stood back and watched, we realized how special our community is. We expand much further than Richmond. We all have different experiences, but being a Spider student-athlete ties us together.
This week, Dr. Derek Greenfield spoke to our student-athlete community about diversity and inclusion. An incredibly passionate speaker, consultant, and leader who has dedicated his life to inclusive excellence and positive change, Dr. Greenfield spoke about the importance of hearing others' stories. The warmth and compassion could be felt throughout the chapel as individuals shared profound testimonies about the struggles they have faced in life. Within this safe space, students found others with similar stories. It is safe to say that Dr. Greenfield pushed us out of our comfort zones, and managed to bring complete strangers and even close friends closer than ever before.
This week is just a continuation of what we hope to see at Richmond. Spiders proudly embracing their multiple identities and supporting each other while doing so. We hope to encourage our fans, family members, and future Spiders to join us.
