Richmond Completes Spider Invitational
10/07/2018 | Men's Tennis
RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond men's tennis team finished its three-day home tournament having played all eight players from Oct. 5-7. The matches were played at the Westhampton Tennis Courts and at local high school The Collegiate.
"Overall, what a great weekend," head coach Houston Barrick said. "This tournament is something we have been talking about for over a year now and I am so happy with how it went. What an awesome experience for our guys to be able to compete in Richmond against so many great players and schools."
The Spiders were able to send out all eight players in singles and doubles. Junior George Lovitt (Marvin, N.C.) after dropping his first match of the tournament was able to win three-straight consolation matches to finish 3-1. Lovitt won all three matches in straight sets, including a 7-6, 6-3 win against James Madison's Pierre Kohler on Sunday.
Freshman John Walsh (Bryn Mawr, Pa.) continued his solid start to the fall season going 2-2 in singles. Classmate Campbell Erwin (San Antonio, Texas) also went 2-2 in singles with a tough three set loss on Sunday against William Karpinski, 3-6, 6-4, 10-6 in the third-place match.
"On the court, I felt like we had a lot of ups and downs," Barrick said. "All the guys competed well but we couldn't find consistent success from beginning to end. We have two more fall tournaments that will help set the tone for the spring season."
Freshman Josh Keitelman (Chevy Chase, Md.) picked up two singles wins, including a win Sunday against Radford's William Crane, 6-1, 6-1.
In doubles, Lovitt and sophomore Joe Nardini (Arlington, Va.) led the team with two wins in the tournament.
Next up, UR will take part in the ITA Atlantic Regionals in two weeks on Oct. 18-22 hosted by Virginia Tech.
