RICHMOND, Va. – The renovations this summer keep coming for the University of Richmond athletic department as the Westhampton Tennis Complex on campus got a makeover. All 10 courts were resurfaced, a new, state-of-the-art scoreboard was installed and a redesigned exterior for matches throughout the year.
"The Westhampton Tennis Complex is one of the top facilities in the region," Vice President and Director of Athletics John Hardt said. "These improvements allow our Spider student-athletes access to 10 state-of-the-art courts, which will help both during competition and practice. Our important work on facility improvements and infrastructure continues with an over-arching goal to enhance the experiences for all of our Richmond student-athletes."
The Westhampton Tennis Complex is a superb facility, nestled in a park-like setting adjacent to the iconic Greek Theatre. The UR coaches' offices are located across the street from the complex, and amphitheater style seating is available for spectators.
"We could not be happier with the development of our outdoor facility," men's tennis head coach Houston Barrick said. "With 10 brand new courts, a new scoreboard, and the redesigned exterior, we can say with confidence that UR has one of the top facilities in the mid-Atlantic region. We view it as a symbol of our past accomplishments and the foundation of future success."
Both the men's and women's tennis programs advanced to the Atlantic 10 Conference Tournament semifinals last spring. Men's tennis had three players earn All-A-10 honors in Caleb Troy, James Aronson and Klein Evans. The women's program had two All-Conference selections in Emily Dunbar and Kiana Marshall. Dunbar was also named the Atlantic 10 Conference Co-Outstanding Performer and was named the Most Outstanding Rookie Performer.
"I am really excited about the upgrades to our facility," women's tennis head coach Mark Wesselink said. "The crystal clear colors look amazing. The new scoreboard is going to be a treat for fans and players. It is one more enhancement to the new facility that demonstrates our commitment to tennis."
