RICHMOND, Va. – University of Richmond President Ronald A. Crutcher announced Friday that Dr. Linda Boland, Associate Professor of Biology, has accepted an appointment as the University's NCAA faculty athletics representative (FAR). Boland, a member of the Richmond faculty since 2004, succeeds Elizabeth Ransom, who this spring completes a three-year stint in that post.
In her role as faculty athletics representative, Boland will be tasked with representing Richmond and its faculty in relations with the NCAA and the Atlantic-10 Conference. In addition, she will provide campus leadership on athletically-related issues and act as a liaison with the University's governance system. Boland has chaired of the university's Faculty Athletics Committee from 2016-18.
"We are delighted to welcome Dr. Boland to her new role as NCAA faculty athletics representative," said President Ronald A. Crutcher. "As a respected scholar, collaborative leader, and former student-athlete, Linda possesses a wealth of relevant experience and a deep commitment to the University's scholar-athlete model. She understands what it takes for our student-athletes to be successful inside and outside the classroom, and she is a passionate advocate for all students at Richmond. I know she will build on Elizabeth Ransom's record of leadership, and I look forward to working with her as we continue to move our athletics program forward."
A fundamental believer in Richmond's commitment to the scholar-athlete model, Boland firmly believes that a student's college education extends well beyond the confines of the classroom or laboratory.
"I am excited to take on this important role," Boland said. "I am committed to ensuring that the university maintains a strong record of facilitating the success of our student-athletes in academics, athletics competition and co-curricular activities, while also preparing for their future successes as alumni. I am eager to begin this work at a time of renewed campus efforts for student well-being and working to provide the best student-athlete experience here at Richmond. The issues that student-athletes face are complex and their need for informed support is important. I am thankful for the opportunity to serve the university as the next FAR."
Boland arrived at Richmond in the fall of 2004 as an Associate Professor of Biology. She is a teacher/scholar in neuroscience and physiology at Richmond. She chaired the University of Richmond Department of Biology for almost three years and served as the coordinator for the Neuroscience concentration. Boland is a graduate of the HERS Leadership Institute for Women in Higher Education.
Boland has also spent 10 years at the University of Minnesota Medical School (1994-2004), working as both a physiology and neuroscience professor. She was a post-doctoral fellow at Massachusetts General Hospital (1992-94) and Harvard Medical School (1990-94).
Boland received her bachelor's degree in biology from the Lafayette College in 1983, before going on to earn a master's degree in biology from Old Dominion in 1985 and a Ph.D. in neurobiology from the University of North Carolina in 1990. At Lafayette, she was a two-sport NCAA Division I student-athlete.
