Spiders Will Seek 14th Straight Top-Five Conference Finish
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. -- The Richmond men's golf program released its schedule for the 2018-19 season on Friday. The Spiders are scheduled to play in nine tournaments plus the annual Black and Blue Cup against VCU. After entering the 2017-18 season as defending Atlantic 10 champions, this year's team is coming off a fifth-place finish in last year's conference tournament, the Spiders 13th top-five conference finish in 13 years under head coach Adam Decker.
"I'm optimistic about this group and the schedule before them," said Decker. "There is a good mix of young guys who are coming in hungry for their chance to move the Spiders forward and upperclassmen who have had success and are eager to get back to the winner's circle. Our schedule is set up to be a tough test during the regular season. The challenge of playing against some of the best teams in the country is great preparation for our run at a conference championship. I'm looking forward to seeing what this group is capable of!"
Juniors Zack Justice and Andrew Sciarretta will pace the Spiders in 2018-19. Sciaretta finished tied for 11th at last year's Atlantic 10 Championship, one year after he and Justice shared second place at the conference tournament after posting matching scores of -7 (209), the fourth-lowest 54-hole score in program history.
The Spiders will begin play on September 17-18 at the Janney Invitational on the Country Club of Virginia's Creek Course. Richmond will compete in four tournaments in the fall, following the Janney Invitational with the River Run Collegiate in Davidson, N.C., (September 24-25), the AutoTrader Collegiate in Duluth, Ga. (October 15-16), and the Steelwood Collegiate in Loxley, Ala. (Oct. 27-28).
Richmond will return to Alabama to start its spring season, participating in the Mobile Sports Authority Collegiate on February 11-12 in Mobile, Ala. That is the first of five tournaments currently on the Spiders spring schedule, which is scheduled to finish at the Atlantic 10 Championship in Orlando, Fla. on April 26-28.
The dates for the annual Black and Blue Cup match-play event against VCU are yet to be finalized. The Spiders are seeking their third straight win in the event.
