RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond is committed to the well-being of its student-athletes and maximizing their potential by making nutrition a priority with the opening of the Sports Performance Fueling Station in the new Blandford-Everett Student-Athlete Performance Center on the lower level of the Robins Center.
"The addition of the nutritional fueling station located in the beautiful new Blandford-Everett Student-Athlete Performance Center is a big step forward in providing our Spider student-athletes with the nutritional support needed to train and compete at the highest levels," Vice President and Director of Athletics John Hardt said. "This enhancement represents another positive development in our commitment to prioritizing the welfare and well-being of our student-athletes."
The goal of the Sports Performance Fueling Station is to fill the gaps in access to nutrients created by the student-athletes unique time demands and schedules required due to their participation in intercollegiate athletics. In addition, it improves Spider student-athletes' ability to optimize nutrient timing. Nutrient timing is the application of knowing when to eat and what to eat before during, and after exercise to promote improved recovery, injury reduction and increased performance.
"The fueling station stands as a symbol of the student-athlete support at Richmond," Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) President Marshea Robinson said. "I remember when a small group of SAAC members first expressed our need for some form of nourishment in order to sustain our bodies throughout the day. I faced issues fueling my body running from practice to class in the morning, and it became difficult to focus in class and perform at practice each day. I realized that many other student-athletes shared these same issues. Seeing the station now makes me realize how supported the Spider student-athletes are. Our voices are heard, and our health is made a priority. I am excited to see what the future holds, but for now I can definitely say that the fueling station has been incredibly helpful."
While the products that are available are important, the most critical aspect to the success of the fueling station is the education provided to student-athletes on proper fueling. The fueling station will create a new platform to engage student-athletes on how, when and why they need fuel. Additionally, the fueling station will have a hydration aspect available 24-hours a day where student-athletes can access unlimited water and PowerAde.
"The fueling station benefits University of Richmond Student-Athletes by providing the fueling resources necessary to fill the nutritional gaps created by the unique time demands of the student-athlete's schedule," Assistant Athletic Director for Sports Medicine Chris Jones said. "By filling these gaps, we will optimize nutrient timing to maximize performance."
The Sports Performance Fueling Station also has the ability to provide student-athletes with to-go meals during the week when scheduling conflicts don't allow student-athletes time to access dining services on campus. This resource will allow Spider student-athletes an option for dining in tight schedules.
"The fueling station gives us the nourishment we need to perform at our highest level in practice and competitions," swimming student-athlete Lexie Gilbert said.
