Richmond Receives High Marks On Graduation Success Rate

RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond has received high marks on the annual NCAA survey on student-athlete graduation success rate released Wednesday. Overall, the four-class average of 94 percent for student-athletes entering between 2009-10 and 2012-13, the most recent statistics released by the Department of Education.
The GSR differs from the federal graduation-rate formula in that the GSR factors in transfer students who do graduate, and does not penalize schools for losing transfers who leave in good academic standing. As a whole, 89 percent of all NCAA Division I student-athletes across the country are earning their degrees, a record high and an increase of 1 percentage point from 2018 numbers.
Fourteen of the Spiders' 17 sport programs have perfect 100 percent GSR ratings: men's basketball, women's basketball, women's cross country, women's indoor track, women's outdoor track, men's cross country, field hockey, men's golf, women's golf, women's swimming, women's diving , men's tennis, women's tennis, and men's lacrosse. All remaining sports were at 84 percent or better and all were ranked well above the federal graduation rates for those respective sports.
Each spring, the NCAA releases a separate set of data, called the Academic Progress Rate (APR), which measures both academic performance and retention. Each program receives an APR score, with teams falling under a certain threshold subject to penalties such as loss of scholarships and postseason bans. The top 10 percent in each sport receive APR Public Recognition Awards from the NCAA. Last May, six Richmond programs were honored in men's cross country, women's cross country, women's track, women's golf, women's soccer and women's swimming and diving earned the accolades.
